Ten Decades - Our Mary
Year 2010
At the beginning of this decade, Mary is 98 years old. She lives moment-to-moment enjoying what each day brings. She is not in a hurry, has no need for argument or strife, and is at peace.
Mary’s life has almost spanned ten decades. The year of Mary’s birth - 1912 - was the same year the Titanic sank. She was a farmer’s daughter. She received a grade eight education. She married early and had five children. She experienced, first hand, the trials of the 1930 depression. She marveled when running water was added to her home and as a result, a new wringer washer emerged. She grieved a child and a husband. She saw many of her grandchildren graduate. She became a great grandmother. She traveled from city-to-city. Lastly, she moved into a care home and now, resides happily.
Soon Mary will be 100 – she will become a Centenarian. She has lived through many traumatic life events and learned to cope with stress and poverty. Indeed, Mary has lived through both bounty and need. Philippians 4:12 says, “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want” (NIV).

The Bible says: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 NIV). This is Mary’s season. She has lived the good life. She has run the race. Well done good and faithful servant.
